Week 3 Story: The Flood

Long, long, ago the people that were on earth worshiped God. Because they all worshiped him and dedicated their lives to him, in turn, God provided them with food, shelter, and safety. These individuals had the lifespan of hundreds of years and some of them even lived to be 1000 years old. Times were much different back then. Unfortunately, because of the actions of man things had to change. As the common man normally does, the people of earth became complacent and lost sight of the reason they were still living and thriving. The people of earth began to worship fake gods that were man made and disrespected their Heavenly Father.

However, one faithful man named Noah never lost sight of who his  creator was and continued to faithfully worship Him and only Him. God was outraged with his people and had a plan to reset the world. Noah was sent a message from God telling him to build an Ark and get a male and female of EVERY animal on earth. With direction from God, each animal, male and female, began traveling to Noah as he built his Ark. Noah was told there would be a flood and warned the people to repent and change their ways but nobody listened.

Finally, once the Ark was finished and all the animals were on board, God opened the Heavens and began to make it rain. The rain was so powerful and numerous and caused extreme flooding all over the world. Once the people recognized Noah was telling the truth they tried to board the Ark; however, it was too late. Everyone on earth died except for Noah, his family, and the animals. The flood lasted for 40 days and the water was so tall it lifted the ark over the highest mountains on the earth.

After the 40 days, a dove brought back an olive branch to show that God had completed His work and the water would soon disappear. Noah, his family, and the animals would now have the task of repopulating the earth and teaching people the way of God. God promised that he would never cause a flood again by using a rainbow.

Author's Note: This was a historical summary of Noah's Ark and a brief explanation of what life would look like after. I added some information to explain why the flood happened and also what would happen after. I also gave some extra details of the time and what life was like back then. This story closely aligns with the original and is more of an educational story and not as much a creative twist on the original. I enjoyed writing this and hope you learn something from it.

  1. Hi, Robbie!

I really liked your capitalization of the word every when you described all of the animals making their way to Noah's ark. It's a really small detail in the grand scheme of things, but it helped emphasize how many animals that is. It helped me pause and be amazed at the idea of a pair of every animal to exist crossing the Earth and getting in one boat. It's the details that make good writing good.

I understand the false idols being a reason for the flood. I wonder if you could expand on that. Had people actually begun worshipping different gods at the altar or is it more of a catchall term for not worshipping God? Perhaps explaining a bit more would lend to how exceptional Noah is in this story.

I know you chose not to take an especially creative approach to this story. However, what if you added in some lines about the 40 day experience for Noah and the animals? You could describe how the ship rocked or how the animals behaved onboard. I think that'd be pretty interesting.

  2. Hey Robbie! I really enjoyed your retelling of Noah’s Ark. This was one of my favorite biblical stories when I was growing up, so I always enjoy hearing people retell it. I really liked the section of the story in which you described how man lost sight of the reasons why they were living and thriving. It’s true that if the going gets too good, people lose track of their blessings. I wonder why people do that? What if the people on earth had never grown selfish, and never lost track of why they live and worship God. I also liked the all-cap emphasis on how Noah had to get a male and female of every animal species on earth. Could you imagine being tasked with trying to do that? I’ve always been curious as to why God flooded the earth and all of his people, but saved different animals.
    You did a great job!

  3. Hi Robbie,
I really enjoyed reading through your retelling of Noahs Ark. I loved this story when I was younger due to the connection of Noah's love for God and hope for the future. My only suggestion to you would be to make this story your own. You could have added a lot more creativity that comes from your heart. Maybe instead of the animals being saved it be people saved from something else like aliens or something, shake things up a bit to make your readers think. Overall though loved it look for to reading more.
